A lengthy diplomatic dispute between India and Canada erupted after former Canadian leader Justin Trudeau accused India of participating in the murder of Khalistani militant Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian territory.

After several months, a Canadian report has alleged that disinformation tactics were employed by PM Trudeau as a means of retaliation against choices that opposed the interests of the state.

“The situation may involve a misinformation campaign that followed the Prime Minister’s statement about possible Indian involvement in Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s assassination (although no concrete evidence linking a foreign nation could be established),” stated the report ‘Public Inquiry Into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions.’

Commissioner Marie-Josée Hogue conducted 39 days of public hearings alongside 18 days of confidential sessions, during which testimony was gathered from more than 100 individuals, including representatives from political parties, Members of Parliament, top officials from the public sector, Cabinet Ministers, and the Prime Minister. Many witnesses took the stand multiple times.

The Canadian inquiry also gathered insights from over 60 experts and members of the diaspora through various panels and policy discussions, as well as holding extensive public consultations for the final report.

“Up until recently, Canada was making efforts to enhance its relationship with India. Nonetheless, the murder of Nijjar, alongside 'credible claims' suggesting a possible connection between Indian government agents and Nijjar's death, obstructed those initiatives. India has consistently rejected these claims,” as noted in the report.

A diplomatic discord occurred between India and Canada after the Canadian Prime Minister charged India with being connected to the assassination of Khalistani separatist leader Nijjar.

Trudeau asserted that Canada possessed enough evidence to corroborate Indian government agents’ involvement in Nijjar’s murder. India, however, strongly refuted these accusations, labeling them as “ridiculous.”
