Implementation of the Uniform Civil Code is set to take place today in Uttarakhand: What we know so far
In the lead-up to the 2022 assembly elections, the BJP had pledged to enact the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand. As of Monday, the state will become the first in independent India to implement this legislation.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has stated that the government is fully prepared for this law's rollout, having secured approval for the rules necessary for its implementation and conducted training for the relevant officials. The reasoning behind this law is the expectation that it will foster 'uniformity in society while guaranteeing equal rights and obligations for every citizen.'
PTI reported Dhami's remarks, describing the UCC as a contribution from the state to the broader 'yagya' (sacred ritual) being led by the Prime Minister, aimed at transforming the nation into a developed, organized, harmonious, and self-sufficient entity.
The BJP's commitment to the Uniform Civil Code was central to their campaign in the 2022 assembly elections, which ultimately led to the party achieving a historic second consecutive term in power—a feat no other party has accomplished since the state’s establishment in 2000.
