BLACK HAWK HELICOPTER
BOMBARDIER PASSANGER AIRCRAFT
The two planes that crashed in Washington are both reliable models utilized globally.
The American Airlines regional jet, a Bombardier CRJ-700, and an Army helicopter were involved in the incident over Washington. These aircraft are known for their dependable performance around the globe.
Officials reported that the jet was carrying 60 passengers along with four crew members. The UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was being flown by three service members during a training mission. It is feared that no one survived the collision on Wednesday night, which resulted in both aircraft falling into the icy waters of the Potomac River.
Approximately 5,000 Black Hawks are operational worldwide, as stated by the aviation website FlightGlobal.com. This helicopter features twin engines and four blades and is produced by Sikorsky, which is a part of defense giant Lockheed Martin.
The helicopter involved in the crash was a military variant, with additional versions designed for the Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard, as well as specific tasks like intelligence collection.
Introduced in 1979, the Black Hawk helicopters have participated in many U.S. military missions, including the operation that led to the death of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in May 2011, as well as conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, and interventions in Panama and Grenada.
Its notable representation came from the 2001 film “Black Hawk Down,” which depicted an American helicopter downed during the civil conflict in Mogadishu, Somalia. Other helicopters have also experienced crashes during training exercises over the years.
The Bombardier CRJ-700 is produced by Bombardier Inc., a conglomerate from Quebec, Canada. In June 2020, the CRJ program was acquired by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries from Japan, which no longer manufactures the aircraft but continues to create its components.
This twin-engine jet is available in various configurations, with seating capacities ranging from 68 to 78 passengers. It is a frequently utilized regional aircraft for short to medium-haul flights, with over 900 units built since its launch in May 1999.
In 2015, Bombardier reported that the CRJ-700 family constituted 20% of all flight departures in North America, averaging around 200,000 flights monthly.
The aircraft involved in the crash on Wednesday was registered as N530EA and produced in 2010, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The jet was operated by PSA Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines.
