S Jaishankar stated that India's viewpoint on this matter has been "consistent" and "principled," and he clearly communicated this to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar has articulated India's position, indicating that New Delhi is receptive to the "legitimate return" of Indian citizens living 'illegally' overseas, including those in the United States.

"We have consistently held that if there are any individuals from our nation who are residing here unlawfully, and we can confirm their citizenship, we are open to facilitating their legitimate return to India. This is not just an approach specific to the US," EAM Jaishankar mentioned during a press briefing in Washington DC on Wednesday (local time).

He reiterated that India's stance on this issue remains "consistent" and "principled," which he clearly relayed to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

"I recognize that there is currently some debate and a related sensitivity regarding this issue. Nevertheless, we have maintained a consistent and principled stance on this matter, and I communicated that clearly to US State Secretary Marco Rubio," he added.

EAM Jaishankar also highlighted that India strongly supports 'legal mobility' between the two nations and aspires for Indian expertise and talent to receive ample opportunities on a global scale.

He expressed that India is firmly against illegal migration, stating it is not "reputationally favorable" and can lead to various unlawful activities.
