22 states initiate legal action to counter President Donald Trump's initiative to abolish birthright citizenship

Donald Trump's directive eliminates immediate citizenship for those whose mothers entered the US unlawfully or whose fathers are non-citizens.

On Tuesday, attorneys general from 22 different states launched a legal action aimed at stopping President Donald Trump from dismantling the long-standing birthright citizenship policy, which ensures that children born in the US are granted citizenship, regardless of the immigration status of their parents.

Trump's directive, announced late Monday and comprising around 700 words, keeps a campaign commitment. However, the final result remains unclear as a prolonged judicial dispute regarding immigration policies is anticipated.

Democratic attorneys general along with advocates for immigrant rights argue that the matter of birthright citizenship is well established in law and emphasize that although presidents have considerable powers, they do not possess absolute authority.

“The president cannot, with a stroke of a pen, erase the 14th Amendment, plain and simple,” stated New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin.

The White House has indicated its preparedness to confront the states in legal proceedings, asserting that these lawsuits represent merely another phase of the Left's opposition.

What is birthright citizenship?

Birthright citizenship bestows US citizenship on all individuals born on American territory, irrespective of their parents' immigration circumstances. Thus, for instance, children born to parents on a visitor's visa or those residing in the country unlawfully are still recognized as US citizens.
