PM Modi in Italy for G7 summit, gains upper hand in Ukraine and Gaza war
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Italy to attend the Group of Seven (G7) summit, after which ceasefire talks in Ukraine and Gaza are likely to take place.
The summit will be held from June 13 to 15 in Borgo Ignazia, a luxury resort in Puglia. Heads of state and government of the seven member states of the United States, the UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and France, as well as the European Union, will arrive by plane.
According to Ambassador Vani Rao, India, which has been invited to the G7 summit as a contact country, has defence and maritime cooperation on its agenda. "Defence and security will be key pillars that we want to build here. We are looking at cooperation on critical technologies, linking up our defence industry and maritime cooperation between the two countries," Rao told ANI.
PM Modi, who is a special guest, will leave for Italy on Thursday with a high-level delegation. Foreign Minister Vinay Kwatra said this will be his first foreign trip since returning as PM for the third time.
Rao said the trip will follow up on some of the key issues discussed during India's G20 presidency.
With Ukraine expected to be one of the topics on the summit's agenda, India reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy are the best options for conflict resolution. "We have always been very vocal not only about conflicts and the need for dialogue and diplomacy but also how conflicts impact the priorities and interests of developing countries," Kwatra said. President Biden will also be among the senior leaders who will meet at the Italian summit. "Biden will be meeting with Prime Minister Modi in Italy and the two leaders will have an opportunity to meet," U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said.
