US is seeking clarification from Israel on a Gaza airstrike resulted in the deaths of over 20 children
The United States is urging Israel to provide clarification on a Gaza airstrike that resulted in the deaths of over 20 children. The Hamas health ministry has reported 93 fatalities in Beit Lahiya, a number disputed by the IDF.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated on Tuesday that the US has engaged with Israel to seek an account of the "horrifying" incident, emphasizing the importance of addressing the humanitarian crisis in northern Gaza.
The Biden administration has expressed deep concern over the situation and the discrepancy between Israel's stated commitment to aid civilians and its actions on the ground. Reports indicate that among the casualties, at least two dozen children were killed, many of whom had been displaced due to the prolonged conflict. The US awaits a response from Israel regarding the airstrike that has escalated tensions in the region.
Medical professionals, as reported by Reuters, confirmed that a minimum of 20 children were among the casualties. The IDF released a statement acknowledging the reports of the airstrike and stated that they are currently investigating the incident. The military acknowledged responsibility for the strike but advised caution regarding the unverified death toll reported by Hamas authorities. In response to the new offensive in the northern Gaza city, an evacuation order was issued for the Beit Lahiya area earlier this month by the IDF.
The military is currently engaged in operations in the vicinity of Jabalia and Beit Hanoun in order to suppress a renewed surge of Hamas presence in these regions.

Chief Justice of India, Justice Chandrachud, has only five days remaining on the bench
Chief Justice of India, Justice Chandrachud, has only five days remaining on the bench before the upcoming recess. During this time, he is expected to deliver five significant verdicts. The Supreme Court is currently closed for Diwali vacations. Upon its reopening on November 4, Chief Justice Chandrachud will have just five remaining working days before his retirement on November 10. Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud is set to retire on November 10, marking the conclusion of a dynamic and eventful two-year tenure as the head of the Indian judiciary.
During his time as CJI, Chandrachud spearheaded a comprehensive transformation of the Indian judiciary, leveraging information technology to enhance accessibility and inclusivity in courts at all levels. Notable accomplishments include the expansion and institutionalization of virtual courts, the introduction of E-Courts to reduce environmental impact and promote paperless proceedings, the implementation of E-Filing for cases, the establishment of E-Sewa Kendras to aid lawyers and litigants with online filing, E-Copying for expedited issuance of certified copies, and Su-Swagatham, an online portal for e-entry passes to the Supreme Court.
This period has been marked by groundbreaking initiatives that incorporate cutting-edge technology to enhance justice accessibility and efficiency, alongside the delivery of landmark rulings upholding personal liberty, women’s rights, gender equality, and the rights of differently-abled individuals.
Currently, the Supreme Court is closed for Diwali vacations. Following its reopening on November 4 (Monday), Chief Justice Chandrachud will have only five working days until Friday. Saturday, November 9th and Sunday, November 10th mark the dates of retirement for him, both falling on holidays for the Supreme Court. During the period between November 4 and November 8, the CJI Chandrachud-led bench is set to deliver 5 significant verdicts. The validity of Madrasa education is currently pending a judgment reserved on October 23. Appeals have been lodged by Madrasas and Muslim individuals contesting the repeal of the Uttar Pradesh Board of Madrasa Education Act, 2004 by the Allahabad High Court.
Concluding the hearing, the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud reiterated that secularism entails coexistence and mutual respect. Emphasizing the significance of incorporating various religious teachings in education, the bench under his leadership underscored the value of accommodating religious diversity. The Bench emphasized that while the State has the authority to establish Rules for overseeing Madrasas, they cannot be disregarded. It was noted that these Rules must be viewed within the context of the nation as a whole.
Religious instructions are applicable to all individuals, not solely for those of the Muslim faith. India is a nation that caters to Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, and others. Chief Justice Chandrachud reiterated this point by stating that India is inherently a religiously diverse country. He stressed that the nation should serve as a harmonious amalgamation of various cultures, civilizations, and faiths. Let us strive to maintain that status quo. The solution to ghettoisation lies in facilitating individuals' integration into the mainstream and promoting community cohesion.
Failing to integrate the teams would result in maintaining them in isolation. The 7-judge Constitution Bench reserved judgment on the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on February 1 following eight days of extensive hearings. A batch of petitions has been filed to reexamine the 1968 verdict by a five-judge bench that revoked the minority status of AMU. The AMU and the AMU Old Boy's Association played crucial roles as petitioners. In 1968, the Supreme Court case of Aziz Basha declared that AMU is not a minority institution, but rather a central university of national significance that is not tied to any specific community. It was founded not by Muslims, but by the British Parliament in 1920.
The Supreme Court has decided that once a constitution declares a university as of national importance, it cannot be deemed a minority institution. The stance taken by the government is that Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) cannot be considered a minority institution due to its "national character" and cannot be affiliated with any specific religion. In the argument presented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, it is contended that Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) cannot be categorized as a university affiliated with any specific religion or religious group. This assertion is based on the premise that any university designated as an institution of national significance cannot be classified as a minority institution. WEALTH REDISTRIBUTION: In the midst of a political dispute surrounding Congress's proposal for wealth redistribution, a nine-judge panel of the Supreme Court has commenced proceedings to interpret Article 39(b) of the Constitution.
This constitutional provision, classified under the directive principles of state policy, is currently being examined to assess its potential authorization for the government to redistribute privately owned properties in the pursuit of the collective well-being. The hearing occurred amidst a period of intense political conflict. Following remarks made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the party has proposed conducting a comprehensive financial and institutional audit to determine the distribution of wealth among the population in the event they secure power. The controversy surrounding the illegal felling of trees in the ridge area of Delhi, in contravention of a Supreme Court restraining order, has brought attention to the role of the Delhi LG.
In the affidavit submitted as per the directions of the Chief Justice of India's Bench, LG V K Saxena stated that he was not aware that prior court approval was necessary before the felling of trees in the Ridge area. No mentions were made at the site regarding the legal requirements. The DDA Vice Chairman Subhasish Panda's actions, whether intentional or unintentional, are to be preserved. The Supreme Court has requested additional clarity through an affidavit regarding the precise moment when it was known that the trees had been cut down.
LMV license jurisdiction: A ruling is pending from August 21. The issue at hand is whether an individual with a driving license for a "light motor vehicle" (LMV) is authorized to operate a "transport vehicle of light motor vehicle class" with an unladen weight of 7500 kg or less. This legal query has resulted in several disputes regarding insurance claims in accidents where transport vehicles were driven by individuals holding LMV licenses.
India and China are in the final stages of disengagement at hot spots in Ladakh
Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi meet on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan
India and China are in the final stages of disengagement at hot spots in Ladakh, with troops from both countries withdrawing from Depsang and Demchok. This move comes after a prolonged military standoff that had escalated tensions. The disengagement process involves joint verification of the pullback of troops and equipment to a pre-determined and mutually agreed distance from the face-off sites. The Indian Army and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have mutually retracted their forces and equipment from the contested areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Temporary structures that had been erected during the standoff in May 2020 have also been dismantled as part of this process, according to sources familiar with the situation. "The disengagement process is nearly complete, with final verification underway as per the agreement between India and China on October 21 to de-escalate border tensions," stated a source. This milestone signifies progress for the Indian Army and PLA in overcoming a two-year stalemate in negotiations to address differences and resolve outstanding issues along the LAC. The fourth and final round of disengagement at Patrolling Point-15 in the Gogra-Hot Springs area occurred in September 2022, leading to subsequent deadlock in talks."
According to Lieutenant General Vinod Bhatia (retd), a former director general of military operations, the disengagement at Depsang and Demchok will enable coordinated patrolling by both sides at the agreed upon frequency and strength of patrolling parties.

Hezbollah has appointed Naim Qassem as its new leader
Hezbollah has appointed Naim Qassem as its new leader, succeeding Hassan Nasrallah. The decision was made by Hezbollah's Shura Council, with Qassem being named the new secretary-general. Qassem, who has been deputy leader since 1991, will take over the leadership role following Nasrallah's assassination by Israel a month ago. Despite initially being an unexpected choice, Qassem, in his early 70s and a former chemistry teacher, has been selected to lead the Lebanese militant group. The prevailing belief among analysts was that the likely candidate would be Hashem Safieddine, who is a cousin of Nasrallah. However, he was slain in a distinct Israeli airstrike on Beirut in early October.
Qassem's appointment "suggests a continuation rather than a shift for both Hezbollah and its supporter Iran," remarked Lina Khatib, an associate fellow at Chatham House, a think tank headquartered in London. The statement conveys a sense of comfort to Hezbollah's supporters and determination to its adversaries. He, as stated by Khatib, is the most seasoned in politics and the most prominent figure among the remaining leaders of Hezbollah. The organization has pledged to dismantle the state of Israel. In October of last year, it initiated attacks on Israel using missiles and drones, immediately following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Its stated goal is to provide assistance to Hamas in Gaza with the intention of pressuring Israel into agreeing to a ceasefire in the region. Both Hezbollah and Hamas receive support from Iran and are recognized as terrorist entities by the United States, along with numerous other nations. While the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah had been relatively stable, with mass evacuations occurring on either side of the Israel-Lebanon border, the situation escalated recently.

Officials have confirmed that three Islamic Terrorists were killed in the Akhnoor area of J-K on Monday. During an incident earlier today, militants targeted an army vehicle and ambulance, prompting a firefight to ensue. According to reports from official sources, the bodies of the three militants were recovered following the exchange of gunfire. The Army vehicle was fired upon by three terrorists in the Batal area around 7 am. The area was promptly cordoned off by security forces, who subsequently initiated a manhunt, as per sources.
The incident occurred while security forces in Jammu and Kashmir had put in place extensive security measures in the Jammu region ahead of the Diwali festival season.
Unfortunately, over the past week, at least 12 individuals, including two soldiers, have lost their lives in various gunfights in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the valley.
On October 24, terrorists ambushed an Army vehicle near Gulmarg in Baramulla, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and two porters. Earlier that day, a teenager from Uttar Pradesh was injured in a separate attack in Tral, marking the third incident targeting migrant workers in Kashmir within a week.
Furthermore, on October 20, terrorists took the lives of seven individuals, including a doctor and six migrant workers, at a construction site in Sonamarg, Ganderbal district. Another migrant worker from Bihar was assaulted just 48 hours prior to this event. Due to the series of terrorist attacks, a meeting was convened at the residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir on October 24th. An official reported that the investigation into the Ganderbal district attack has revealed considerable deficiencies in intelligence and undetected infiltration along the Line of Control (LoC) over the past year.

Trump returned to Madison Square Garden for a rally where he and other speakers made controversial remarks
Trump returned to Madison Square Garden for a rally where he and other speakers made controversial remarks, despite the venue's history of hosting a pro-Nazi event. This event was seen as unlikely to sway New York's Democratic leaning. The rally drew a large crowd of supporters, marking Trump's return to the city where he gained fame as a property developer before entering politics. Alongside Trump, other notable speakers included Elon Musk, JD Vance, Tulsi Gabbard, Rudy Giuliani, Dana White, Tony Hinchcliffe, Hulk Hogan, and Robert F Kennedy Jr. Key statements from the rally included "Kamala, you're fired!" Trump reiterated the famous line he used as host of "The Apprentice." "You have ruined our country." "We refuse to accept this any longer, Kamala," stated the 78-year-old Trump at a rally. "We will swiftly combat inflation and restore affordability to America," he added. Trump also declared, "In a clash with China, we will emerge victorious," emphasizing, "Our military is unrivaled."
Furthermore, he asserted that as president, Russia would not have invaded Ukraine or Hamas would not have attacked Israel. "Ukraine held significant importance for him (Putin), however, I cautioned Vladimir against intervening," commented Trump. "I hail from this city, my birthplace and upbringing instilling the belief that Americans possess boundless capabilities," he remarked about New York City. "Our commonality lies in our shared blood." We hold a common aspiration.
"We are a singular populace, a unified family, and a grand nation under the auspices of God," he proclaimed. Elon Musk asserted his intention to reduce the existing federal budget of $6.5 trillion by $2 trillion. Musk stated, "Your funds are being squandered." "We aim to reduce government intervention and lessen financial burden on individuals. Currently, there is a significant accumulation of debris forming a floating island in the ocean." Tony Hinchcliffe stated, "I believe it is referred to as Puerto Rico."
He proceeded to ridicule Hispanics for their perceived lack of birth control usage, Jews for their perceived frugality, and Palestinians as individuals who throw rocks. "I do not take chances with those who are indoctrinated to harm Americans from a young age," stated Rudy Giuliani. "I align with Israel." Tucker Carlson, a former host at Fox News, mocked Kamala Harris, whose mother is of Indian descent, as "Samoan, Malaysian, and low-IQ."

The CJI DY Chandrachud-Meetings between the Executive and Judiciary are for administrative purposes or social etiquette
The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, stated that meetings between the Executive and Judiciary are for administrative purposes or social etiquette, and not for negotiation of deals. He emphasized that while their interactions may create a perception of deal-making, this is not the reality. Such interactions are just one aspect of the ongoing dialogue between various branches of government. Meetings between Judiciary and Executive heads are not intended to discuss judicial matters, but rather focus on administrative or social issues, clarified CJI DY Chandrachud on Saturday. He emphasized that these engagements do not involve any deals and are simply part of a healthy exchange between different arms of government. "The perception of deals being made is incorrect," he added. This forms a crucial aspect of the extensive communication among various branches of the government. The efforts of all three branches are committed to enhancing the welfare of the country. The conversation does not pertain to our roles as judges; we maintain full impartiality in that regard. The Chief Justice of India highlighted the overlap between the administrative functions of the judiciary and the executive branch. He underlined the longstanding practice of the head of government at the state or union level consulting with the head of the judiciary. This practice has led to speculation about the subjects of their discussions. The focus of the conversation does not involve ongoing legal matters. The political system's maturity is evidenced by the significant deference shown to the judiciary by the political class," he remarked.
CJI Chandrachud made these comments during the Loksatta Lecture at Mumbai University on October 26.
He further elaborated that during his time as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and as a member of the administrative committee in Maharashtra, it was customary for the Chief Minister to visit the Chief Justice's residence, and vice versa.
"In these meetings, agendas are set regarding infrastructure or IT projects, funding opportunities, and prioritized projects by the executive." Is there an opportunity for us to engage in dialogue? These interactions often lead to a heightened sense of maturity within the political system. Through my own experiences, particularly during my tenure as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and overseeing the construction of the Lucknow bench building, I have observed the value of such engagements. "The discussions that took place were," stated the CJI in response to inquiries about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's attendance at the Ganesh puja at the CJI's residence. Additionally, he clarified that interactions between a Chief Minister and High Court Chief Justice are essential due to the Executive's responsibility for handling judicial budgets. "A Chief Minister never engages in conversations about ongoing cases as that falls within a distinct realm." The administrative connection between the High Court and State government differs from the judicial duties performed by judges. Similarly, the administrative dynamic between the Supreme Court and the current government varies significantly from the judicial responsibilities we undertake," he expressed. When it comes to the consultation process for nominating judges, the CJI noted that consensus may or may not arise, a trait he viewed as a positive aspect of the system. "The interaction between various levels of the Executive and Judiciary is handled with a high degree of maturity, with communication playing a crucial role in this regard." The Chief Justice of India must engage in discussions with the Minister of Law to assess the validity of any concerns raised regarding a potential candidate. You are required to engage in discussion with one another. "The CJI noted a significant display of maturity in this instance," the Chief Justice of India articulated.
Concerning critiques of democratic establishments, the CJI remarked that the opportunity for enhancing institutions should not suggest inherent deficiencies within the institution.
"The key consideration is whether we have implemented a more effective system." We need to recognize the ease with which we critique the institutions established in the past 75 years. He explained that every institution has its strengths and potential for improvement.
