Britain's Labour Party shifted its stance on Kashmir under Keir Starmer
The overwhelming majority of the UK Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, paved the way for a new chapter in a relationship with India that has been difficult in the past over the issue of Kashmir.
Until now, the Labour Party has been stronger than other British political parties in addressing issues such as alleged human rights violations and the Kashmir dispute with India.
In 2019, the Labour Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, passed an emergency motion on the Kashmir situation at its annual conference in September 2019. India responded harshly, describing Corbyn's Labour Party move as "uninformed and unfounded".
Several Labour MPs of Indian origin, as well as others with large constituencies in the region, also faced backlash over the decision, which they deemed anti-India.
The request follows the Indian government's decision in August 2019 to revoke the special status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that a humanitarian crisis exists in the region and that the people of Kashmir should be granted the right to self-determination. .
Corbyn was suspended from the Labour Party in 2020 after a row over anti-Semitism. He ran as an independent candidate and won in Islington North, a constituency he has represented since 1983.
Now appointed British Prime Minister, Starmer is likely to right the party's past mistakes. His election manifesto included a promise to pursue a "new strategic partnership" with India. "Labour will build and strengthen modern partnerships with allies and regional powers. We will pursue a new strategic partnership with India, including a free trade agreement, as well as deepening cooperation in areas such as security, education, technology and climate change," he said.
Last month, Labour leader and current Foreign Secretary David Lammy spoke about continuing our relationship with India.
