'Congress unleashes dark phase': PM Modi on Samvidhan Hatya Diwas
The 18-month-long Emergency was declared on June 25, 1975, during the Congress government of Indira Gandhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday attacked the Congress after the Central government announced that June 25 would be celebrated every year as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' to counter the Emergency imposed by the Congress government of Indira Gandhi in 1975.
"The observance of June 25 as #SamvidhaanHatyaDiwas will serve as a reminder of what happens when the Indian Constitution is trampled upon. The day is also a day to pay tribute to all those who suffered under the excesses of the Emergency, a dark period in India's history unleashed by the Congress," PM Modi posted on social platform X. Following the results of the 2024 Sabah state elections, the 18th Sabah state constitution has been framed. Congress leader Om Birla criticised the Emergency in his first speech after his second term in office. President Drupadi Murmu also condemned the Emergency in his address to a joint sitting of Parliament.
"The Indian Constitution has withstood all the hurdles that came its way between its drafting and implementation. It has also withstood the attack it faced after independence in the form of the National Emergency imposed on this country 50 years ago," she said.
Referring to "Samvidhan Hatiya Diwas", Home Minister Amit Shah said, "On June 25, 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, displaying a dictatorial spirit, imposed Emergency in India and strangled the soul of Indian democracy." Hundreds of thousands of people have been detained without reason and media voices have been suppressed.
"The Government of India has decided to celebrate 25 June every year as 'Samvidhan Hatiya Diwas'. This day will remind us of the immense contribution of all those who suffered inhuman suffering during the 1975 Emergency," he added.
Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader JP Nadda wrote that "democracy enshrined in the Constitution has been 'killed.'"
