A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Hathras district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, where at least 130 people, mostly women, were killed in a massive crowd during a religious event. The incident occurred soon after religious preacher Bhole Baba addressed devotees in a specially erected tent in Rati Bhanpur village in Sikandra Rau area of Hathras district.
According to police, prima facie, a suffocation hazard at the venue appears to have created anxiety among the satsang participants. People then started running, causing mass panic.
The exact cause of the incident is under investigation.
Recounting the horror, one survivor said the stampede happened after a religious function had ended and everyone hurriedly left the spot. "There were so many supporters gathered at the spot. There was no way out and everyone fell on top of each other and there was total panic. When we tried to leave, we saw motorbikes outside blocking our way. Many people fainted and others died," said the victim, who was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, took notice of the incident on Tuesday and announced compensation of Rs 200,000 to the kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 to those injured.
Meanwhile, President Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to those who lost their lives in the tragic incident.
