Pahalgam terror attack: JD Vance calls on India and Pakistan to prevent ‘broader conflict’, US assistance & more
On Thursday, US Vice President JD Vance stated that India should respond cautiously to the terrorist incident that occurred last week in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, to prevent a “broader regional conflict.” In an interview with Fox News, Vance also highlighted the necessity for Pakistan to work with India to combat the threat posed by extremism.
Here are the key updates
US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth reached out to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to express his condolences for the recent loss of life resulting from the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. During their discussion, Hegseth reiterated the “strong backing” that the United States provides to India in light of the incident.
In a message on X, Hegseth wrote, “Today, I had a conversation with Indian Defence Minister Singh @rajnathsingh to personally convey my heartfelt condolences for the lives lost in last week’s reprehensible terrorist attack. I assured my steadfast support. We stand united with India and its wonderful people.”
This development occurs as the US addresses the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals. At the same time, the Pakistani military has been enhancing its presence along the Indian border and has positioned air defense and artillery units in advanced locations.
Tammy Bruce, a spokesperson for the US State Department, mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the complete support of the Trump administration, emphasizing that Washington is actively engaging with both the Indian and Pakistani governments in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
In a press briefing on Friday, Bruce underlined that the United States is closely monitoring the situation. She also referred to the summary of Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s conversations on Thursday with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
“We are keeping a watchful eye. Yesterday, the Secretary communicated with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. As President Donald Trump expressed to Prime Minister Modi last week, the United States firmly stands with India against terrorism, and Prime Minister Modi has our complete support,” she stated.
