'Deeply ashamed': Netherlands PM denounces 'antisemitic' assault on Israelis in Amsterdam
Dutch PM Dick Schoof criticized the assault on Israeli football supporters in Amsterdam, expressing his strong disapproval that it occurred in the country.
Dutch prime minister Dick Schoof denounced the attack on Israeli football fans in Amsterdam as "extremely antisemitic" on Friday. Schoof expressed his profound shame over the incident that occurred in the Netherlands in 2024. During a press conference at the European Union leaders' meeting in Budapest, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands condemned the horrific anti-Semitic attack. We do not accept (it). We will take legal action against those responsible. And I am profoundly embarrassed that this could occur in the Netherlands in 2024." Schoof also mentioned that he would depart the summit early to travel to Amsterdam to assess the situation.
This follows numerous Israeli football supporters being assaulted by pro-Palestinian organizations in Amsterdam following a game between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax in the UEFA Europa League. Witnesses and footage from the event displayed a gang of individuals running through the streets pursuing numerous individuals, while shouting anti-Israel phrases. The Dutch authorities detained 62 individuals on Friday in relation to the antisemitic assault on Israeli football supporters, following a minimum of five individuals being admitted to the hospital due to the altercation.
