New Orleans New Year assault: 15 fatalities as driver displaying ISIS banner plows into crowd
An individual from the United States, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, drove a pickup truck into a gathering of New Year celebrants in New Orleans, resulting in 15 deaths and numerous injuries.
On Wednesday, a US citizen brandishing an Islamic State banner and determined to cause devastation steered a pickup into a throng of New Year’s attendees in New Orleans, leading to at least 15 fatalities and injuring many others, as reported by authorities.
The FBI has identified the perpetrator as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US national hailing from Texas and a veteran of the Army. It appears he was employed as a real estate agent in Houston and served as an IT specialist during his military service. Officials indicated they are investigating potential accomplices, though they provided limited information.
Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick characterized Jabbar as a "terrorist," while the FBI noted that "an ISIS flag was found in the vehicle," referring to the Islamic State militant group.
"The FBI is actively working to ascertain the individual’s possible connections and affiliations with terrorist organizations," the agency stated in its announcement.
Officials have indicated that a manhunt is in progress, with FBI agent Alethea Duncan cautioning that authorities "do not believe that Jabbar acted alone."
