Israeli forces vow response to Iran’s attack despite calls for restraint

Iran launched the attack in retaliation for an airstrike on its embassy compound in Damascus on April 1 attributed to Israel, and signalled that it did not seek further escalation.

Israelis awaited word on how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would respond to Iran’s first-ever direct attack as international pressure for restraint grew amid fears of an escalation of conflict in the Middle East.

Netanyahu on Monday summoned his war cabinet for the second time in less than 24 hours to weigh a response to Iran’s massive weekend missile and drone attack, a government source said.

While the attack caused no deaths and little damage, thanks the air defences and countermeasures of Israel and its allies, it has increased concerns that violence rooted in the Gaza war is spreading, and fears of open war between the long-time foes. Israeli military chief of staff Herzi Halevi said on Monday that “this launch of so many missiles, cruise missiles and drones into Israeli territory will be met with a response” but gave no details.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani told state television on Monday that Tehran's retaliation against Israel "will be eliminated within seconds, because Iran will not wait another 12 seconds." But the prospect of Israeli retaliation has alarmed many Iranians, who have suffered health problems and social and political pressures since the 2022-23 strike.

Iran carried out the attack in retaliation for Israel's April 1 attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus and said it would not seek to further escalate tensions. U.S. President Joe Biden told Netanyahu this week that the United States, which helped Israel thwart Iranian attacks, would not participate in Israel's offensive. Since the outbreak of the Gaza War in October, there have been conflicts between Israel and Iran-based groups in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iraq.

Israel said that despite the conflict with the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, four soldiers were injured from a distance of hundreds of meters in Lebanese territory overnight, in its first attack on Lebanon since the beginning of the Gaza war.

"We are on the edge of the abyss and we must stay away from it," EU foreign minister Josep Borrell told Spain's Onda Cero radio.

French President Macron, German Chancellor Schautz and British Foreign Secretary Cameron also made similar calls. Washington and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also called for a ban.
