The man was burned for several minutes in full view of television cameras set up outside the courthouse where the former US president's first criminal trial was being held.

NEW YORK: A man shot himself and died Friday outside the New York court where the jury selected for Donald Trump's historic financial verdict was sitting, but authorities said that did not happen to Trump.

The man was burned for several minutes in full view of television cameras set up outside the courthouse where the first crime of a former US president was committed.

NBC News and other US media reported the man's death early Saturday. NBC News reported that New York police said the man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities had previously said the man in his 30s was in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses said that the man took the paper from his backpack, threw it into the air, poured liquid on it and set it on fire. One report said "evil billionaires" but Trump was not mentioned in the Reuters witnesses' comments.

New York Police Department, St. Augustine, Florida, does not appear to be targeting Trump or anyone involved in the experiment.

"We're recording his teacher's attendance right now and we'll go from there," Deputy Tarik Shepard said at a news conference.

In an online manifesto, a man using that name said he set himself on fire and apologized to friends, bystanders and first responders. The post warned of "apocalyptic fascist attacks" and criticized cryptocurrencies and American politicians, especially Trump.

According to Reuters eyewitnesses, shortly after the incident, the square was filled with smoke and police sprayed the ground with a fire extinguisher. A smoldering backpack and a bag of gasoline can be seen.

On Monday, the first day of the trial, the courthouse in midtown Manhattan was heavily guarded by police; This led to crowds of protesters and spectators, although their numbers gradually decreased.
