Mamata wants govt that is soft on terrorism: Nadda CBI recovers arms and ammunition
CBI officials claimed that most of the weapons found in the raid at Sandesh Khali on Friday were for use by the armed forces and said they would investigate whether Shahjahan Sheikh's neighbors got them.
A CBI official said that at least one police officer's gun was among the seized weapons. Investigators said they found a purchase order in the name of Shah Jahan from an arms and ammunition dealer. They said it was unclear whether the ammunition, which was not publicly accessible, was purchased from a dealer or an illegal source.
Some ammunition that could be purchased for personal use was also part of the consignment, CBI officials said.
“We will verify the bills with the dealer,” said an officer.
The central agency on Friday recovered a cache of arms and ammunition allegedly hidden under the floor of the house of Abu Taleb Sheikh, said to be an aide to suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan.
CBI officers clarified that there was no criminality in possession of licenced arms or ammunition. “But possession of unauthorised cartridges and even misuse of authorised arms and cartridges is illegal,” an officer said.
The seized arms included 9mm calibre cartridges and 9mm bullets. According to arms experts, the use of 9mm bullets and cartridges is restricted to uniformed forces and they are not commercially available.
The seizure also included 50 pieces of 0.45 caliber cartridges which are also not commercially available, CBI sources said.
Sources in Sandeshkhali said Shahjahan had a “fascination” for collecting arms and would spend “lakhs” even on a second-hand gun if it caught his fancy. CBI teams revisited Sandeshkhali on Saturday and spoke to people around Abu Taleb’s house. His wife Marjina Bibi was also questioned.
