Congress Surat Candidate missing, 8 Others Withdraw

According to local media reports today, Surat Congress leader Nilesh Kumbhani is missing and cannot be reached on phone. A day earlier, BJP's Mukesh Dalal was declared the winner in the BJP stronghold after all other candidates withdrew from the race.

Following the announcement that Mr. Kumbhani might join the BJP, Congress workers staged a protest outside the jail and put up posters saying "janata ka gaddar (traitor to the people)".


The shocking incident took place after the BJP won its first Lok Sabha victory in Surat. Gujarat BJP leader CR Paatil said yesterday that Surat presented the "first lotus" to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "I congratulate our candidate for the Surat Lok Sabha seat, Mukesh Dalal, for his barrier-free election," he said in the press release dated X.


. The Congress party approached the Election Commission, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party in Gujarat was campaigning. "Incorrectly and without influence" and demanded that the election process be restarted.

Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi, after meeting the Election Commission, told reporters: “We therefore request the Election Commission to postpone the elections in Surat and correct it again quickly to give a clear message that you cannot use this mistake for negative impact

Mr. Singhvi claimed that in Surat, Congress candidate Kumbani was selected by four lawyers, “but suddenly all four of them. The people stood up and refused to sign."

"This is no coincidence. The candidate disappeared for a few hours and when he reappeared we saw that all the candidates had withdrawn their votes. His candidature was rejected by the returning officer," he said.
