2 New Recruits Help Israel Track Hamas Operatives In Gaza. They Are Both AI
There are reports that the Israeli military is using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) in bombing operations against Gaza. The so-called "Lavender" and "Bible" systems have played an important role in the IDF's mission strategy and have sparked controversy over their ethics and legality.
What is Lavender? AI
Created by Unit 8200, Israel's elite intelligence unit, Lavender operates as an intelligence production facility designed to identify potential targets affiliated with Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). Lavender used machine learning algorithms and analyzed vast amounts of data to identify individuals in the military group who were considered "junior" militants.
According to reports by the Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 magazine and the Hebrew-language magazine Local Call, Lavender initially identified some 37,000 Palestinian men with ties to Hamas or PIJ. The use of artificial intelligence to identify targets is a major shift in the way Israeli intelligence agencies Mossad and Shin Bet operate, relying on more human decision-making.
The military often makes a split-second decision, and according to Lavender's data it takes about 20 seconds to decide whether to bomb these targets, mostly based on gender identity. Even though the AI program has a margin of error of up to 10 percent, meaning it could be wrong by up to 10 percent, most human soldiers follow the machine's instructions without question. The report stated that the program mostly targeted individuals with little or no connection to Hamas.
What is Gospel AI
Gospel is an alternative intelligence that takes goals based on intelligent ideas. Unlike Lavender, who knows people's targets, Evangelist sees houses and buildings as targets. It is a system that allows the creation of targets quickly through the use of electronic equipment and the development of the most accurate and best intelligence profiles when needed. The Israeli Defense Forces provide good advice to researchers in order to ensure perfect competition between the quality of the machine's ideas and the analysis made by humans, by ensuring the elimination of new skills quickly and with the help of intelligence," the Israel Defense Forces said in its statement.
However, experts say that artificial intelligence-driven targets It says it analyzes different data, often including drone footage, intercepted communications, surveillance data and codes of conduct.
Ethical and Legal Issues
The use of lavender and the gospel in Israel's bombing campaigns represents a significant advance at the intersection of intelligence and modern warfare, but also leads to justice and law. While these technologies are effective in targeting and combating targets, their deployment raises ethical and legal challenges.
