Supreme Court rejects return to ballot paper, poses questions on EVMs, counting process

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the idea of going back to the voting date and questioned petitioners challenging the sanctity of votes cast by electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the justices said they did not remember what happened. It happened during the voting. . vote.

Sanjiv Khanna, who hosted the two benches of the judge, said, "Fortunately, we are in our sixties now. We have seen what happened before. Don't you remember? If you have forgotten, I am sorry, I did not hear it. It is in the back." Advocate Prashant Bhushan appears on behalf of the petitioner NGO Society for Democratic Reforms and wants the EVM to give 100 per cent votes to VVPAT. Currently VVPAT alone verifies 5 EVMs per session.

Bhushan wondered if the judge was talking about the arrest booth. Commenting on this, Justice Khanna said, "Forget holding the stands. But what happens when the votes are cast... Let's not argue." To vote, Bhushan came up with the first idea of voting using paper ballots. There will be a vote. Most European countries have resumed the use of paper ballots. He said that the Constitutional Court of Germany had decided why EVMs cannot be trusted and hence paper votes should be used.

Justice Datta rejected this suggestion, saying that elections in India "are a Herculean task and will not be possible in any European country." We should not make examples or comparisons between Germany and other countries. There are more people in my state of West Bengal than Mr. Trump. Bhushan said in Germany. It is a very small country... We need to have some faith and trust in someone. Of course they have a role too... but don't try to destroy the system like that.

The judge also asked many questions about the functioning of the EVM and the process of recording and counting votes.

He also asked about ADR mailing that "most voters do not trust EVM" and asked Bhushan who did the mailing "where did you get it".

Bhushan replied that it was a CSDS-Lokniti poll.

“Poll! …Let’s not believe in these private polls,” Justice Datta said.
