Who Is Israel Katz, The New Israeli Defence Minister?


Israel Katz is a member of the right-wing Likud party, led by Netanyahu. He has served in the Knesset (parliament) since 1998.


Formerly Israel's foreign minister, Katz has now been appointed as the defence minister, following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to remove Yoav Gallant from the position.


Netanyahu cited a lack of trust in Gallant's handling of military operations in Israel, including the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.


Here are some key facts about Katz:

* Born in 1955 in Ashkelon, Israel.

* Drafted into the military in 1973.

* Served as a paratrooper and left the military in 1977. He hasn't held a senior military command role, unlike his predecessor Gallant, who was a general before becoming defense minister in 2022.

Katz, a member of Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party, has been a member of the Knesset (parliament) since 1998. In the Knesset, he was a member of multiple committees, including those overseeing foreign affairs, defense, and justice.


Over the past twenty years, he has served in various ministerial roles, such as agriculture, transport, intelligence, finance, and energy portfolios. He was named foreign minister in 2019.

* Katz, as foreign minister, expelled Antonio Guterres in October, stating that he was not welcome at the U.N. The Secretary-General's refusal to definitively denounce Iran's missile strike on Israel was criticized for being antisemitic and anti-Israel.

In October, he directed his ministry to initiate legal action against French President Emmanuel Macron for barring Israeli companies from a military naval trade show. Katz has maintained a low profile in Israeli-U.S. relations. interactions during U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's 11 visits to Israel since October.
