Assad Regime Collapses, Insurgents Proclaim "New Era" In Syria: 5 Major Developments
The administration led by Bashar al-Assad has undeniably collapsed in Syria. This Sunni-dominant nation, shaken by an intense insurrection against a Shia leader, now anticipates a fresh beginning after five decades.
The command of the Syrian military has notified its troops that the Assad regime has fallen following the insurgents' declaration that President Assad has escaped the country. "We proclaim the city of Damascus liberated," they announced on Telegram as they marched into the capital this morning.
The insurgents also proclaimed the commencement of a "new era" for Syria. "After 50 years of subjugation under Baathist governance, along with 13 years of atrocities and despotism and (forced) deportation, we declare today the conclusion of this grim time and the initiation of a new era for Syria," they stated. The Syrian insurgents have urged citizens currently abroad to return to a "liberated Syria."
This morning, they stormed Sednaya prison—infamous for its severe abuses under the Assad regime—and released the inmates. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali has pledged to collaborate with any leadership that the populace selects. Expressing his readiness for any transition procedure, he stated in a Facebook live session, "We stand ready to assist and provide all necessary support."
The head of the rebel forces has affirmed that government institutions will continue to operate under the Prime Minister until the transfer process is completed. Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, who leads the rebel faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has instructed the "military forces" in Damascus to refrain from approaching government establishments.
