A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan on Wednesday, making it the island's strongest quake in at least 25 years. The earthquake was strong enough to lift buildings from their foundations, causing authorities to issue a tsunami warning for Japan's southern islands and the Philippines.

A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck near Taiwan before 9:00 am local time (0000 GMT) in Japan on Wednesday, prompting a tsunami warning for Japan's southern islands. In response, the Japan Meteorological Agency made the announcement.

The agency predicts tsunamis of up to three meters (10 feet) in Japanese territory near Taiwan, such as Miyakojima.

In a sparsely populated area of ​​Hualien, a five-story building was severely damaged, its first floor collapsed and the rest tilted at a 45-degree angle. Meanwhile, in Taipei city, tiles of old buildings were broken and some new office buildings were also affected.

Tsunami warning: Japan airport flights suspended

A major airport in Okinawa, southern Japan, suspended flights on Wednesday due to a tsunami warning triggered by the earthquake in Taiwan.

Speaking to AFP, the airport's transportation manager stated that operations at Naha Airport were suspended as of 09.25 local time (0025GMT) as a precaution, adding that "incoming flights should be diverted."

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude of this earthquake was 7.4. The epicenter is 18 km south of Hualien, Taiwan, with a depth of 34.8 km.
