 US Authorizes $320 Million F-16 Fighter Jets, Radar Systems for Taiwan 


On Friday, the United States announced its approval for the potential transaction of spare components for F-16 fighter jets and radar systems to Taiwan, with a total deal estimated at $320 million. 


According to a statement from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, this planned sale includes items already within US military inventory. 


“The proposed transaction serves the national, economic, and security interests of the United States by aiding the recipient’s ongoing initiatives to upgrade its military forces and sustain a credible defensive capability,” stated the DSCA. 


“This potential sale will enhance the recipient’s capacity to address current and forthcoming threats by ensuring the operational readiness of the recipient’s fleet of F-16 aircraft.” 


China maintains that Taiwan, which operates independently, is part of its territory and stands against any global acknowledgment of the island and its aspirations for sovereign status. 


Despite not recognizing Taiwan diplomatically, the United States remains a significant international supporter. 


The planned sale encompasses “spare components and assistance for F-16 jets” alongside “Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar spare components and assistance,” as per the DSCA. 


The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the US initiated the request for this acquisition, with deliveries projected to commence next year, it further noted.
