US President Biden grants pardon to son Hunter in criminal matters, contradicting prior commitments on family favoritism 

Reversing his earlier assurances against employing the exceptional powers of the presidency for his relatives' advantage, outgoing US President Joe Biden granted a pardon to son Hunter on Sunday evening, thereby shielding him from a potential prison sentence due to federal felony convictions related to firearms and tax offenses. 

Biden had earlier indicated he would neither pardon his son nor reduce his sentence following his convictions in the two cases occurring in Delaware and California. 

This decision arises mere weeks before Hunter Biden was anticipated to face sentencing following his trial conviction in the firearms case and his guilty plea regarding tax violations, alongside being less than two months away from President-elect Donald Trump's impending return to the White House. 


Consequently, the prolonged legal drama involving President Joe Biden's son comes to a conclusion. Hunter Biden made it public that he was the subject of a federal inquiry in December 2020, shortly after his father's win in the 2020 presidential race. 


Biden reneges on commitment 

In June, Biden categorically ruled out any chance of a pardon or sentence reduction for his son. While Hunter was undergoing trial for a gun-related matter in Delaware, Biden told reporters, “I respect the jury’s verdict. I will adhere to that and I will not grant him a pardon.”
