A Kolkata court has sent Sanjoy Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor, to 14-day custody. Sanjoy Roy, the main accused in the case of rape and murder of a young doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, appeared emotional before a judge on Friday, maintaining that he was innocent. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had produced Sanjoy Roy before a Kolkata court and sought permission to administer the polygraph test to the accused and suspects in the case. The lie detector test can only be carried out after obtaining the consent of the court and the suspect.

Sanjoy Roy reportedly broke down when the judge asked him why he agreed to the polygraph test, The Times of India reported. He told the court that he accepted the evidence because he believed he was innocent. "I didn't commit a crime. I stood up. Maybe this trial will prove that," Sanjoy Roy was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

The court then authorized a polygraph test on Sanjoy Roy. In addition, the court ordered a detention measure of 14 days. The court also allowed a polygraph test for former director of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh and five others related to the case. These five people included four doctors who had dined with the deceased doctor on the night of the incident and Roy.

Kolkata doctor rape and murder case


The practicing doctor was raped and murdered in a seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

The crime took place in the seminar room of the third floor of the pulmonology department late at night, and the police later said that several wounds and lacerations were found on his body. Sanjoy Roy was arrested a day after the crime. He was seen entering the building around the estimated time of the crime and his Bluetooth headset was found near the crime scene. Some pornographic clips were also allegedly found in the mobile phone of Sanjoy Roy.
