Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday welcomed the introduction of the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) by the central government, highlighting its role in securing the financial future of government employees. In a major move affecting millions of employees, the BJP-led central government on Saturday approved the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS).
This scheme guarantees an assured pension and an assured family pension. After the union cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that around 23 million central government employees will benefit from UPS.
The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The Union Cabinet today approved the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) for government employees, which provides an assured pension… 50% assured pension is the first pillar of the scheme… The second pillar will be the family insurance pension. Around 23 million central government employees will benefit from the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) ... Employees will have the option to choose between NPS and UPS,” said Union Minister Ashwini Viahsnaw. Referring to the insured pension, he said that it will be 50% of the average salary received in the last 12 months before retirement for a minimum service of 25 years. It will be prorated for a shorter period of service up to a minimum of 10 years of service.
