'Don't use social media for your arguments': Chief Justice DY Chandrachud speaks to lawyers in Kolkata case

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud's rebuttal came as he headed the three-judge bench hearing a suo motu case related to the rape and murder of the doctor in Calcutta. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday dismissed the '151 mg sperm' theory in the Kolkata hit-and-run case and told a lawyer not to rely on social media for his arguments in court . Chief Justice Chandrachud's rebuttal came as he headed the three-judge bench hearing a suo motu case related to the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital on August 9.

During the hearing, one of the lawyers said that the PMR (autopsy report) talks about 151 mg (milligrams) of semen, it is in ml (milliliters). "To this, Chief Justice Chandrachud replied, 'Don't confuse this. Don't use social media to take your case to court. Now we have the autopsy report in front of us and we know what it refers to 151 We do not use what we read on social media to formulate legal arguments on this basis. »

Supreme Court criticizes Calcutta Police

The Supreme Court also slammed the Kolkata Police for its "extremely worrisome" delay in registering the case of a woman doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital.

The bench headed by Chief Justice Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, questioned the 14-hour delay in filing the first information report (FIR) and the reasons.

He also examined the sequence of events and the timing of the procedural formalities.

“Who was in touch with the principal of RG Kar Medical College? Why did he delay the preliminary investigation procedure? What was his purpose? ", asked the court.

The Supreme Court is currently hearing a series of petitions related to the rape and murder of a government hospital doctor. The victim, a postgraduate medical intern, was found dead in the hospital's seminar room on August 9. The medical examination confirmed the rape. The Kolkata police arrested one accused, a citizen volunteer named Sanjoy Roy, a day after the incident. However, a few days later, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), observing that no significant progress had been made in the investigation by the city police.
