Prime Minister Modi's historic visit to Ukraine: a hug and a handshake with Zelensky

The two leaders are expected to hold one-on-one and delegation-level talks, focusing on ways to find a negotiated solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met President Volodymyr Zelensky in the first ever visit to Ukraine by an Indian Prime Minister. Prime Minister Modi and Zelensky kissed and shook hands during their meeting at the Martyrs' Exhibition in Kiev. The two leaders are expected to hold one-on-one and delegation-level talks, focusing on ways to find a negotiated solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

His visit to Ukraine comes nearly six weeks after his high-profile trip to Russia, during which he held in-depth talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin largely focused on ending the conflict. Prime Minister Modi last met Zelensky in June, on the sidelines of the G7 in Puglia, Italy. During the meeting, he told the Ukrainian president that India will continue to do everything in its power to support a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian conflict and that the path to peace is through "dialogue and diplomacy" .

He also told Mr. Zelensky that India believes in a "humane" approach to finding a solution to the conflict in Ukraine. During this meeting, the Ukrainian president invited the prime minister to Kiev. Earlier on Thursday, he spoke to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and said the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia were a matter of "deep concern" and that "dialogue and diplomacy" was the way to restore peace .
