There were no immediate reports of injuries. Indian Railways has sent buses to help the passengers reach Kanpur and arrangements have been made for the passengers to continue their journey to Ahmedabad. "22 buses of the Sabarmati Express derailed, but no one was injured," Rakesh Verma, general manager of Kanpur city, told ANI.
The locomotive pilot said that a rock hit the front of the engine which was badly damaged.
According to the Indian Railways, seven trains were canceled and three were diverted due to the derailment.
Where and when did Sabarmati Express leave? According to the railway's investigation website, the train derailed at 2:29 am on Saturday, about 30 minutes after leaving Kanpur Central Station near Bhimsen. On the same line, the Patna-Indore train ran non-stop at 1.20am.
