Supreme Court to hear Bengal Dr Rape Murder plea

Calcutta doctor rape and murder: the Supreme Court to hear the accusation today, but the question persists

The Supreme Court on Tuesday will hear the reasons in connection with the rape and murder of a young doctor in Calcutta earlier this month. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a suo motu plea on Tuesday in connection with the rape and murder of a young doctor in Kolkata on August 9 at the RG Kar Medical Hospital. The plea was listed as the first case and is likely to be heard at 10:30 am on August 20. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, which took cognizance of the incident, kept the case at the top of the list of cases for hearing on Tuesday. The suo motu case in this case is titled "In Re: Incident of alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, and a connected case". The petition seeks to widen the scope of judicial review in the matter and assumes significance in view of the fact that the Calcutta High Court is already in action and has transferred investigations in the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). . The prayer also takes into account the national outrage over the gruesome killing of the medical school graduate student, as well as the doctors' protests and demands for hospital safety. Doctors' associations, Federation of Medical Consultants Associations of India (FAMCI) and Federation of Resident Doctors Associations (FORDA), along with advocate Vishal Tiwari, have also approached the Court Suprema filing interim petitions in the suo motu case.

In its advocacy, FAMCI has raised concerns about the safety of health professionals in hospitals and the dangerous environment of medical facilities. Doctors' associations have called for a central law to address these concerns and have asked the Indian government to close loopholes in state laws for the safety of doctors. The request also sought to develop guidelines to strengthen security measures in medical colleges and hospitals across the country to avoid such incidents in future. On August 9, the injured body of a 31-year-old doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, West Bengal. The autopsy report revealed that the doctor had been raped. A citizen volunteer was arrested by the Calcutta Police the next day in connection with the case.
