Supreme Court takes judicial notice of Calcutta rape and murder case; hearing on August 20

The Supreme Court's ex officio intervention follows an August 13 order by the Calcutta High Court handing over investigations to the Calcutta Police's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). For this case, the police arrested a citizen volunteer.
Amid protests by doctors across the country, the Supreme Court has taken judicial notice of the alleged rape and murder of a doctor practicing at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
According to the August 20 list of cases uploaded on the Supreme Court website, a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud is scheduled to hear a case titled “In Re: The alleged incident of rape and murder of an intern at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Calcutta and related matters”.
The Calcutta High Court recently transferred the investigation from the Calcutta Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). On August 16, a petition was sent to the CJI asking the Supreme Court to take judicial notice of the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate medical intern in Calcutta on August 9.
The petition raised the issue of a series of alarming incidents of brutal attacks on medical professionals. Citing the Kolkata incident, the petition said it has seriously affected the morale of the medical community and the authorities are worried about their safety across the country.
