The Israeli military has exchanged fire with Iran-backed Hezbollah along Lebanon's southern border in parallel with the war in Gaza, with hostilities having recently escalated amid fears of a full-scale regional war. Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Friday killed at least six fighters and a child, security sources said, while the Hezbollah armed group responded with artillery shells and rockets across the border. Israel's military has exchanged fire with Iran-backed Hezbollah along Lebanon's southern border alongside the war in Gaza, with hostilities escalating recently amid fears of a full-scale regional war.

Israeli attacks in the southern Lebanese cities of Mays al-Jabal and Tayr Harfa on Friday killed four Hezbollah fighters, according to the party's death notice and a security source. Another fighter was killed in another attack outside Aitarun, according to the security source. It was not immediately clear if the fighter was a member of Hezbollah.

Another Israeli attack in the village of Aita, about 14 km north of the border with Israel, killed a Hezbollah fighter and a child, the security source told Reuters. Hezbollah identified the fighter killed in Aita as Mohammad Najem.

The Israeli military, in a statement posted online, said it targeted Najem in Aita because he was a member of Hezbollah's rocket and missile unit. He said he had targeted two other Hezbollah fighters in the south. According to the statement, "several shells fired from Lebanese territory" entered northern Israel, but no injuries were reported.

Hezbollah's press service said the group fired rockets and artillery at various Israeli military positions throughout the day. More than 600 people have been killed in Lebanon since fighting began last October, including more than 400 Hezbollah fighters and more than 130 civilians, according to a Reuters report.
