Ousted Syrian President Assad, Family In Moscow, Granted Asylum: Report
Exiled Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad along with his family has arrived in Moscow, where they have been provided asylum, according to reports from Russian state media today. This news comes just hours following the takeover of his nation by Islamist-led insurgents.
"A Kremlin source informed TASS and Ria Novosti news agencies that Assad and his relatives have landed in Moscow," the source conveyed. "Humanitarian grounds were cited as the reason for Russia granting them asylum," he continued.
Social media buzzed with speculation from flight trackers concerning the elusive location of Assad for the majority of Sunday.
Data from the Flightradar website indicated that a Syrian Air aircraft departed from Damascus airport around the same time that insurgents seized control of the capital.
The plane initially directed its flight path towards Syria’s coastal area, home to Assad’s Alawite community, but abruptly reversed its course, traveling in the opposite direction for a short time before vanishing from radar screens.
This unexpected change in trajectory and the aircraft’s disappearance from tracking may suggest it had been shot down, or alternatively, that its transponder had been deactivated. Given that Assad and his family are now located in Russia, it seems probable that the aircraft had indeed switched off its transponder.
Assad’s exit comes less than two weeks after the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched a rapid offensive that challenged over fifty years of Assad family dominance.
"Following 50 years of oppression under the Baath party, and 13 years marked by atrocities and tyranny and forced displacement... we today declare the conclusion of this grim epoch and the beginning of a new chapter for Syria," the rebel groups announced via Telegram.
The Islamist leader of HTS, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, made an appearance at the remarkable Umayyad Mosque in Damascus’ capital, where he was welcomed by enthusiastic crowds with friendly smiles and warm embraces. HTS is linked to the Syrian faction of Al-Qaeda.
Designated as a terrorist entity by Western nations, HTS has been making efforts to rehabilitate its public image in recent years.
