Police have arrested a person in connection with the death of a second-year medical student at a Kolkata hospital. The medical student was found dead in the government seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday, with the post-mortem report later confirming that she was sexually assaulted. The incident sparked widespread condemnation, with political parties laying charges while doctors and nurses led protests.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Resident Doctors Associations has since written to Union Minister JP Nadda seeking action within 24 hours. A message published by the organization on Saturday also raised the possibility of a "stoppage of services in all institutions" if the administration does not address the problem. The victim, a post-graduate medical student, was found partially clothed in a seminar hall at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday. The autopsy report showed signs of sexual assault before she was killed between 3am and 6am. The pulmonary medicine student was on call Thursday night.

"We have arrested a person who is a foreigner. His activities are quite suspicious and he seems to be directly involved in the crime," a police official told PTI. "We have registered a case ... It is a case of murder and sexual assault. Our investigation is moving in the right and transparent direction. Whatever the further development, we will keep you informed as far as the law allows," said the deputy commissioner of police Murli Dhar.
