6 People Dead In Recent Violence In Manipur, Fortifications Demolished, Helicopters On Surveillance.
Six individuals lost their lives in recent conflict earlier today in the Jiribam region of Manipur, as reported by authorities. Alleged Kuki rebels assaulted Nungchappi settlement located 229 km away from the state capital Imphal, resulting in the death of a 63-year-old individual known as Yurembam Kulendra Singha. The assault occurred the day following the death of an older gentleman from the Meitei community, who was praying, in a rocket-propelled bomb attack carried out by Kuki rebels in Manipur's Moirang town, as reported by authorities.
Sources report that five additional individuals lost their lives in a shootout between armed factions of the Meitei ethnic group and the Kuki tribes residing in the hills. This group identifies as "village defense volunteers".
The Jiribam Superintendent of Police (SP) and a team of police quickly responded to the scene, where shots were fired at them. The police reported that the team "responded forcefully and managed to stop the gunfire."
Jiribam is the location where Meitei and Hmar leaders convened for discussions on peace last month, in the presence of security forces chiefs. They had issued a collective declaration expressing their commitment to endeavor towards harmony. Kuki factions in Churachandpur have raised concerns about the peace negotiations, claiming that the negotiation parties do not advocate for their needs and only meet at the request of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
The Hmar Inpui, nonetheless, stated it would not acknowledge the peace proposal and cautioned the people who took part in the gathering to "cease their foolish and self-centered endeavors". The Hmar Inpui had stated that these leaders seemed to be yielding to the "caprices and desires of a divisive and sectarian government led by Biren Singh... "They are not allowed to depict Hmar in any way, at any place, at any time."
System for countering drones, helicopter surveillance
According to authorities, a counter-drone system has been put into operation, following a recent assault by alleged Kuki rebels on villages in the Imphal West region using weaponized drones. This marks the first instance of suspected rebels carrying out drone attacks in India.
