Israel has shared a video showing a confined tunnel where hostages were held and killed. Efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, including a hostage release deal, have faced obstacles, as Israel and Hamas blame each other for the impasse.
The video, released by the Israeli military, depicts a dark and narrow tunnel with blood on the ground, sealed by an iron door. Inside, bullets and a chess set can be seen, serving as evidence of the location where six hostages were allegedly killed by Hamas.
According to Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the video was recorded by the military last Friday while a forensic team was investigating the deaths of the hostages. The film was made public on Tuesday following approval from both the families and the Israeli security cabinet. The six hostages were tragically killed on the night of Aug. 29. Hagari stated.
Their bodies were discovered and recovered by Israeli military personnel in the southern Gaza region of Rafah approximately 48 hours later. Hagari stated that a minimum of two Hamas militants fatally shot them in the underground tunnel, which measures 20 meters (66 feet) in depth, less than 170 centimeters (5.6 feet) in height, and around 80 centimeters (32 inches) in width.
The militants utilized an exit shaft located below a children's room in a house. The hostages were probably confined in the damp tunnel for an extended period, potentially weeks, making it difficult to breathe and stand upright, as stated by Hagari. A video featuring English narration reveals Kalashnikov rifle magazines, bags filled with urine, and a makeshift toilet consisting of a bucket in a hole. Women's apparel is scattered across the floor. The live broadcast on Israeli television channels included the Hebrew version, showcasing a chess set. Reuters could not confirm the location or date of the video independently.
During the incident, Israeli troops were engaged in combat with Hamas militants in the vicinity, according to Hagari, who mentioned that the soldiers were not conducting a rescue mission at the time of the hostages' deaths. The military lacked reliable intelligence on the hostages' whereabouts in the area, according to him. The six hostages who were killed included two women and four men ranging in age from 23 to 40, with five of them abducted from the Nova dance festival targeted by militants on Oct.
In the past year, seven incidents occurred. One individual was a father whose baby was delivered while he was held captive. The recent killings in Israel have triggered widespread condemnation and a wave of mourning. Attempts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, which would involve a hostage release agreement, have stalled, as Israel and Hamas each accuse the other of responsibility for the impasse. Mass demonstrations held last week urged Israeli officials to take further action for the release of hostages. Approximately 250 foreign and Israeli captives were taken by Hamas militants during their incursion into Israel on October. The missile strikes conducted by Hamas on Israel over a period of seven days resulted in the death of 1,200 individuals, as reported by Israeli sources. Israel's military operation in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 40,000 Palestinians to date.
