Kolkata doctors persist with protest beyond Supreme Court deadline, cite Mamata Banerjee's invitation for talks as "humiliating". The state government disclosed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached out to the protesters, urging a meeting at the secretariat to address the ongoing deadlock resulting from the incident. Despite the expiration of the Supreme Court’s ultimatum to resume duties by 5 pm on Tuesday, junior doctors in West Bengal vowed to prolong their protest until their demands are met and justice is served for the victim at RG Kar Hospital.
As the medical professionals entered their 32nd day of protest on Tuesday, pressing for the dismissal of the Kolkata police commissioner and various senior officials from the state health department, the state government revealed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had penned a letter to the demonstrators, proposing a meeting at the secretariat to resolve the impasse. Nonetheless, the protesting doctors dismissed the invitation as "insulting", pointing out that it was sent by the state health secretary, who they were demanding to resign. They expressed discontent over limiting the attendance of representatives to 10 at the meeting, deeming it as "humiliating".
On the other hand, 51 doctors at RG Kar hospital, including senior residents and professors, were accused of promoting intimidation and disrupting the institution's democratic environment. They were summoned to an inquiry committee on September 11. Doctors' Protest
The strike by junior doctors commenced on August 9, shortly after the discovery of the female trainee's body in the hospital's seminar room. Subsequently, the protest has intensified, causing disturbances in healthcare provision at state-operated hospitals throughout West Bengal. The state administration asserted in the Supreme Court that the strike has led to the fatalities of 23 individuals and has significantly hindered the healthcare service infrastructure.
