Putin arrives in Mongolia, key link in planned gas pipeline to China

Putin arrives in Mongolia, flouts global tribunal's detainment order

Putin was greeted by a ceremonial guard upon his arrival in Ulaanbaatar the previous evening to kick off the highly publicized journey, viewed as a display of defiance against the court, Kyiv, Western nations, and advocacy organizations that have all demanded his arrest.

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Mongolia for an official trip on Tuesday, marking his initial visit to a member state of the International Criminal Court (ICC) since a warrant for his apprehension was issued last year.

Putin received a warm reception from a prestigious escort upon his arrival in Ulaanbaatar the evening before embarking on his highly publicized visit. This gesture is perceived as a bold statement against the judiciary, Kyiv, Western countries, and advocacy organizations that have demanded his arrest.

The leader of Russia is being sought by the court in The Hague for supposedly unlawfully removing Ukrainian children from the country after his soldiers entered in 2022.

On Monday, it alleged that Mongolia was partially to blame for Putin's alleged "war atrocities" for not apprehending him at the airport.

Kyiv had requested Mongolia to carry out the arrest warrant, while the ICC stated recently that all its members were duty-bound to apprehend individuals wanted by the court.

During real-world scenarios, there is minimal action that can be taken if Ulaanbaatar fails to adhere.

A lively democracy located between autocratic superpowers Russia and China, Mongolia has strong cultural ties to Moscow and a crucial economic partnership with Beijing.

It was under the control of Moscow during the time of the Soviet Union.

And after the downfall of the Soviet Union in 1991, it has endeavored to maintain amicable ties with both the Kremlin and Beijing.

The nation has refrained from criticizing Russia's attack in Ukraine and has chosen not to vote during discussions about the conflict at the United Nations.

The Kremlin stated last week that they were not worried about Putin being detained during the visit.

The main Genghis Khan Square in the capital city, also called Sukhbaatar Square, was adorned on Monday with enormous Mongolian and Russian banners for Putin's initial trip to the nation in half a decade.

In the afternoon, a small demonstration formed, with protesters displaying a banner that called for the removal of "Remove War Criminal Putin from this place".

Another demonstration is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at noon at Ulaanbaatar's Monument for the Politically Oppressed, commemorating those who endured hardships during Mongolia's prolonged Soviet-supported communist government.

The government of Mongolia has remained silent regarding the appeals to detain Putin.

However, a representative for President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh refuted claims on social media on Sunday that the ICC had issued a letter requesting for the warrant to be carried out upon his arrival.

Russia refuses to acknowledge the authority of the ICC.

Amnesty International issued a caution on Monday regarding Mongolia's inability to detain Putin, fearing it could weaken the credibility of the ICC and empower the former KGB agent who has been in control for nearly 25 years.

"President Putin is on the run from the law," Altantuya Batdorj, executive director of Amnesty International Mongolia, declared in a press release.
