First of all, what is the EU's Copernican project? The Copernicus project is part of the European Union's space program and aims to monitor Earth and its environment by collecting data from a constellation of satellites called Sentinels. It also receives information from support missions (commercial and civil satellites that already exist) and from outer space or outer space, such as ground stations. The processes and analyzes data to create more useful data that can be used for a variety of applications in a variety of environments. These include land management, marine environment, weather, emergency response, security and climate change, according to the European Space Agency (ESA) website. The website says users can get this information "completely, openly and free of charge." The Copernicus project was launched in 1998 and was previously known as the Global Monitoring System (GMES). It is currently being implemented by the European Commission (EC) with support from the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Environment Agency (EEA).

So what is Copernicus EMS?

Copernicus EMS has been in operation since 2012, providing geographic information from satellite remote sensing and responding to information to help manage natural disasters, humanitarian crises and humanitarian problems. This service has two components: component reporting and early warning. The first provides maps and analysis based on satellite imagery following warning issues related to floods, inundation and wildfires, and enables close monitoring of the effects of wildfires.

The Mapping component consists of two modules: Rapid Mapping (RM); RM was activated to search for Lacey's helicopter and was able to provide a map of any location in the world within days or hours.
