Delhi: Fire breaks out at New Hospital, seven babies die
At least seven of the 12 rescued newborns died after a fire broke out at Vivek Vihar Newborn Hospital in East Delhi. As a result of the incident, six babies died, one of them before the fire broke out.
Delhi Fire Service (DFS) sent nine fire trucks to the fire station.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary said: “With the help of others, all 12 newborns were rescued from the hospital and shifted to East Delhi Advanced NICU Hospital in Vivek Vihar, at the same time fire crews were sent to the emergency room to intervene and the fire was brought under control. It is stated that 6 of these children lost their lives. All seven bodies were transported to GTB Hospital for autopsy.
Police said the child was rescued from the upstairs house. Authorities said that the fire broke out in a 3-storey building and the entire building burned down.
DFS manager Atul Garg had earlier said that they received a call about the fire around midnight. “The call is about a fire in the nursery. There are many babies inside. Firefighters work there. "The fire was extinguished and the children were rescued," he said. He spoke shortly after the fire. A video taken from the scene shows villagers helping to save the child. A group of people lifted jewelery and stairs to reach the upper floors and carry the baby to safety. Authorities said the fire spread to nearby buildings but was quickly brought under control.
Fire crews came to the scene and extinguished the fire. News agency ANI reported that the fire was completely extinguished.
The baby was admitted to East Delhi Advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Hospital following the fire.
Fire Chief Rajesh told ANI, “At 11.32 pm, the fire control room received information about a fire in the hospital... The fire truck reached the spot and the fire was completely burnt out. Two buildings were affected by the fire, a hospital, and the second floor of a building on the right also burned... 11-12 people were rescued and taken to the hospital.
