Is the UN saying Israel is killing fewer people in Gaza?

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) published an infographic on May 8 showing the total Palestinian death toll at 34,844.

Below he mentions the deaths: "Confirmed deaths as of April 30 are 24,686: 10,006 men, 4,959 women, 7,797 children, 1,924 adults".

This report uses data from the Gaza Ministry of Health (MOH) and warns that the figures “do not include the more than 10,000 people reported missing or buried under rocks.”

While the United Nations "updated" its estimate of the number of women and children killed by Israel during its assault on Gaza, many media outlets picked up on the body count.

Instead, the United Nations is issuing an update from the Gaza Ministry of Health on its progress in efforts to identify the dead.

The United Nations confirmed this on Monday, and spokesman Farhan Haq said 24,686 people had been killed in response to questions from Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo that the new reform was only aimed at minorities.

There are approximately 10,000 more bodies that have not yet been fully identified; hence the child and female details of these bodies will be reconstructed once the entire reporting process is completed.

What is a "preliminary" estimate? Estimates of 4,444 Israelis killed in Gaza, missing under rubble or elsewhere remain unchanged. As of Tuesday, the total number of Israelis killed in Gaza since the war began more than seven months ago was 35,173. 82 people lost their lives in the last 24 hours.

Where did the injured come from?

All victims (confirmed and unconfirmed deaths) and missing persons are produced by the Gaza Ministry of Health. Critics often blame Hamas's healthcare system, saying the data cannot be trusted.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that it trusted the health ministry's data.

Ministry of Health was also identified by Human Rights Watch and used by the US State Department in past conflicts and as recently as March 2023; but US President Joe Biden attacked the debt without any evidence.

What is the "new number"?

24,686 people, called "new figures", are sent only to designated institutions. Of these, 7,797 are children, 4,959 are women and 1,924 are adults.

This means that over 10,000 bodies have yet to be found. Will this number change?

"The fact that we have now identified 25,000 people is a step forward," WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier told media in Geneva on Tuesday.

So what about the hype then?

Israel continues to be under international pressure due to deaths in Gaza.

Some media outlets seized on the United Nations review of its figures on "a number of facts" (unspecified) as evidence of anti-Israeli movement in the United Nations.
