Ukraine said it had withdrawn its troops from several villages in northeastern Kharkiv, where Russian forces had launched a new offensive along the border and attacked settlements there.

During his visit to Kiev, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the US would support Ukraine until its security "works".

Russia said a major airport near the city of Kazan, 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from Ukraine, was temporarily closed after the area was targeted by Ukrainian attack drones.

According to reports in the Spanish press, Ukrainian President Zelensky canceled his visit to Madrid on Friday, and a new protocol from the Spanish Royal Palace confirmed the news.

Officials said Zelensky canceled his upcoming visit to Spain and Portugal. CNN Portugal and other media reported that this happened due to conflicts in his country.

King Felipe of Spain is scheduled to host a reception and dinner for Zelensky on Friday.

Zelensky is also expected to sign a bilateral security agreement with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, following last year's NATO announcement.

A spokesman for the Portuguese government said the Ukrainian president canceled his visit but did not say why.

Spanish government sources say they were informed that Zelensky will not come to Spain this week. Russia's Kazan Airport has resumed operations after temporarily suspending flights, the air traffic controller said.

Moscow announced an unexpected ground attack on the Kharkiv region last week in a bid to escalate the level of conflict in which Kiev is struggling for weapons and personnel.

A soldier said on national television: "We carried out a drill to save the lives of our soldiers due to the fire and attacks opened by the enemy in some places in the Lujanchi and Wolfchansk region, and the soldiers are being sent to the Vantage point."
