Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is the captain of Chennai Super Kings since 2009. The longest coach in IPL and also the one who did the best. In 2009, Fleming led CSK to the semi-finals in his first year in charge. , won their first IPL title.

CSK scored a hat-trick under Fleming and became the IPL 2011 champions by beating RCB in the final in Chepauk. Under Fleming's guidance, CSK reached the last three of the IPL in the next four matches and won their second Champions League title in 2014, beating KKR in the final at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

After Justin Langer took over as captain in the summer of 2018, the Australian team faced a major problem. The conflict hit Cape Town in early March that year.
