Kamala Harris missed a significant opportunity with her choice of running mate, according to an expert. Election data analyst Nate Silver stated that selecting Tim Walz was a strategic misstep for Harris.
In the Silver Bulletin newsletter dated Sunday, September 8, the FiveThirtyEight founder stated that the vice president missed a significant chance to shift towards the center by choosing [Minnesota Gov.] Tim Walz over [Pennsylvania Gov.] Josh Shapiro.
This comment was in response to a New York Times/Siena College poll indicating that 47% of likely voters believe Harris is too liberal. "[Harris] has demonstrated greater political skill than what was evident in 2019.
It is regrettable that her campaign at the time was managed by individuals who appeared to perceive Elizabeth Warren as a conservative," Silver commented. "I believe Walz was a satisfactory choice based on his qualifications, but when presented with a chance to demonstrate the trajectory of her leadership, Harris regressed to her approach from 2019. Numerous progressive Democrats expressed discontent at the possibility of Shapiro as a potential vice presidential candidate before Harris announced her selection."
