A Pakistani citizen living in Canada was detained following accusations of trying to supply aid and assistance to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), according to a US Department of Justice announcement. The 20-year-old suspect, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, purportedly plotted a terrorist plot in New York City around October 7 with the goal of killing as many Jewish individuals as he could in the name of ISIS, according to Attorney General Merrick B Garland's statement. 

"The accused supposedly planned to murder Jewish individuals within the United States, almost twelve months following Hamas' appalling assault on Israel." The FBI directed this inquiry, and I am pleased with the fantastic effort put forth by the FBI squad and our collaborators in thwarting Khan's scheme," stated FBI Director Christopher Wray. 

"The FBI remains committed to collaborating with our allies to probe and punish individuals attempting to carry out violent acts on behalf of ISIS or other extremist groups." Combatting terrorism continues to be the FBI's primary focus," Wray stated. 

According to the accusation, Khan allegedly tried to journey from Canada to New York City, with the goal of conducting a large-scale shooting in support of ISIS at a Jewish center in Brooklyn, New York. Khan started sharing on social media and chatting with others on a secure messaging app about his backing for ISIS in approximately November 2023, during which he shared ISIS propaganda videos and materials, among other activities. Following that, he initiated contact with two undercover police officers, as per the statement. 

Khan kept telling the undercover cops to get AR-style assault rifles, ammo, and other supplies for the attacks, and specified where the attacks would happen. Khan additionally imparted information on his plan to traverse the boundary from Canada into the United States in order to carry out the assaults. Throughout these discussions, Khan stressed that October 7th and October 11th are the optimal days for focusing on the Jewish community, as October 7 marks the Hamas assault on Israel. Yom Kippur, a significant Jewish holy day, falls on October 11th. 

The individual from Pakistan is accused of one charge of trying to offer assistance and supplies to a recognized international terrorist group. If found guilty, he could potentially serve up to two decades behind bars. A federal district court judge will decide on the punishment following an evaluation of the US Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.
