Veteran Congress leader Sam Pitroda, whose comments on the US estate tax last month sparked a major row with the Bharatiya Janata Party, has led others in his bid for the presidency. In an exclusive interview with
The Statesman, Mr. Pitroda described India as: "...a strange country... Eastern people are like Chinese, western people are like Arabs, northern people can be like white people, eastern people can be like white people, and like Africans who said to X Himanta Biswa Sarma: “Sam bhai, I am from the Northeast and look Indian. We are different people; We may look different but we are all one. "
Hamare desh ke bare mein thoda for samajh lo! (Please at least learn something about our country)," a senior BJP leader replied to Mr. Pitroda.
Professional actor Kangana Ranaut, the BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, also responded by accusing Pitroda of being "racist" and "divisive".
"Sam Pitroda is Rahul Gandhi's mentor. Listen to his hatred and discrimination towards Indians. Their (Congress Party) ideology is all about divide and rule. Referring to Indians as Chinese and African is obscenity. Shame on the Congress! said.
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Shehzad Poonawalla called Mr Pitroda's comments "shocking, vile and disgusting".
"He is the eighth mentor of Rahul Gandhi… They were separated primarily by race, religion and language. Now they are creating a difference between Indians and Indians. So, is it discrimination to say that Indians and Chinese are the same? Isn't this insulting and offensive? 'It shows that Congress ki Mohabbat ki Dukan is full of 'racism' and 'racism'..."
