Project 76: The Indian Navy Places a Large Wager on "Submarine Fighter Aircraft" to Showcase Power and Deter the Massive Chinese Navy
While engaged on Project-75 India (P75I) and the nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) scheme, India also began initial investigations for creating its own conventional submarine through Project 76.
In a major effort to enhance its naval capabilities, India has started ambitious programs for the acquisition and advancement of submarines. These efforts are directed towards updating the Indian Navy's submerged vessels, bolstering its tactical potential, and boosting domestic defense manufacturing.
Initial Research for Project-76 (P-76)
The Indian Navy has granted approval for a significant submersible building initiative as part of Project-75 India (P-75I). This project includes constructing six sophisticated traditional submarines outfitted with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology.
While P-75I advances, India has commenced a fresh, progressive endeavor titled Project-76 (P-76), with the goal of enhancing autonomy in underwater vessel technology. This effort aims to create and provide six cutting-edge diesel-electric attack submarines for the Indian Navy.
The project is a joint venture involving the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau. As per reports, DRDO has initiated initial research for the creation and advancement of a local traditional submersible as part of project P-76.
