Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned today and left Dhaka by helicopter after thousands of protesters stormed her palace. Protesters broke down the gates of Sheikh Hasina's official residence, prompting her to leave the country by helicopter. Sheikh Hasina landed at Hindon air base near Ghaziabad and is on her way to London, diplomatic sources said. It was received by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval at Hindon Air Force base.

Sheikh Hasina, 77, the leader of the Awami League and three-time prime minister of Bangladesh, resigned today amid a 45-minute ultimatum from the military and took a flight from the violence-torn country to a destination unknown This is probably familiar territory for a leader who began his political journey in exile after his father was killed by Bangladeshi army officers.

The son of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday called on the country's security forces to block any checks, as hundreds of thousands of protesters called for her resignation.

"Your duty is to protect our people and our country and defend the constitution," US-based Sajeeb Wazed Joy said in a Facebook post.

Bangladesh army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said the army would form an interim government. At least 300 people have been killed in more than a month of deadly protests. The protests have intensified despite the bill that Bangladesh's highest court has been resized.
